Hi there! I take it you're interested in having me commission a piece of artwork
for you? That's wonderful! I'm more than happy to see what I can do for you. But
first, there are a few things you should know about the work I do and the commission
process.
What mediums do you work with?
For the most part I am a digital artist; creating images by manipulating pencil sketches and ink drawings in photoshop. However, I am also willing to do on-site painting in certain circumstances. I enjoy doing both, but the later is much more difficult to accomplish and a lot more expensive due to time constraints. However,
if this is something that truly interests you it never hurts to ask.
Can I request any subject matter I want?
Certainly, but I can't guarantee I'll agree to draw it. There are few projects I'll refuse to take based on subject matter alone. However, as an artist I reserve the right to turn down projects that depict subjects or acts that I do not wish to be associated with.
What will it cost me?
At this point prices aren't fixed but subject to negotiation based on the complexity of the image, estimated time to completion, chosen medium, usage and other such factors. I can however give you a general idea what to expect. Most private pieces
will run around $150. This is for a single digital character in full color with a semi detailed
background. If you need something more complex with additional
characters, a more detailed environment, an image you can reproduce and sell commercially,
or an on site painting the price goes up.
Digital Pencil Sketch - $50.00 :::
Digital Ink Line Art - $100.00 :::
Digital Full Color - $150.00
Ouch, why so expensive?
In short it's really not. Considering the amount of time invested in any
given work of art this is an extremely low price. I do however make exceptions occasionally,
especially for charitable groups and organizations.
Can I get a hard copy of the image?
When it comes to digital art the initial commission estimate covers the creation of the digital image alone, not the cost of a tangible print. Print costs will be negotiated separately based on the desired size of the print, matting, framing,
etc. If you'd like to purchase the original sketch this is also an option but you
should know I'm extremely greedy with my sketches and don't eagerly part with them.
What rights do I have over the finished product?
First and foremost, it's extremely important you understand that ownership does
not convey copyright. Just because you've paid me to create something for you does
not give you unlimited domain over where and how that image is used. As I mentioned
earlier, images can be commissioned for either commercial or private use and the
route you take is your choice.
What can I do with a private commission?
If you're interested in ordering an image of a character you've dreamed up so you
can place it on your private website, blog, forum, desktop and/or print out a large
copy to hang over your fireplace this is considered private use. Essentially you're
allowed to display the image anywhere you want as long as you don't alter it, market
it for profit, or resell it.
What can I do with a commercial commission?
If you want to use the image as an illustration in a work of your own that you intend
to sell (an online novel, website or magazine, a printed book, magazine or manual,
or as an icon that will be reproduced on any kind of merchandise for sale such as
t-shirts, calendars, etc.) then this is considered commercial use. Commissions of
this kind will be accompanied by a license agreement that specifies the details
of when, where, and how the image can be used.
Is this really necessary?
I realize all this sounds overly technical and recognize the fact that copyright law can be daunting at times, but I assure you that I will take every necessary
step to make the process as sooth and simple as humanly possible. Use of the image
will be ironed out as a natural part of the commission process.
How can I pay you for your work?
I accept two methods of payment at this time: Paypal and Personal Check. I prefer and encourage the use of paypal for it's simplicity and speed but will also accept checks, provided you're willing to wait for bank clearance. I generally insist on
having 50% of the total cost paid to me up front. However, I will make exceptions
for return customers, family, and close friends.
What if part of the image needs to be changed?
If I forgot about something we ironed out during our initial email correspondence
I'll make the necessary change right away for no additional charge. If the change
is needed because you've changed your mind or weren't clear up front, it will cost
you more.
How is that fair? We had an agreement!
Case and point, I estimate cost up front based on how much time I suspect
the project will take and I make those time estimates based on the description I
get from you. If you're not sure of what you want up front and I head down a path
only to have you decide on something completely different halfway though, I've wasted
my time up to that point. This isn't to say you have to type ALL the details about
your project in the form on the next page. After I receive your initial request
we will continue discussing the project via email until we have all the details
ironed out.
This sounds great! Hold my spot and I'll fill out a request soon!
I apologize but I simply can't hold spots in the project queue. If you're
serious about ordering a commission, take a moment to fill out the form and begin
the process.
That's about all there is to it really. Being able to create works of art and images
of the imagination for people all over the world is my passion. So what do you say?
